How To Stay Ahead In The Age Of AI: 20 Must-Have Soft Skills

How To Stay Ahead In The Age Of AI 20 Must-Have Soft Skills

via Forbes.com

AI is reshaping workflows across industries, but the technical tools being employed are only part of the story. While technical fluency has its place, long-term career strength increasingly depends on the ability to navigate change, build trust and exercise judgment where technology cannot.

The skills that determine whether one remains relevant in their career are less about mastering every new tool and more about leading, communicating and adapting effectively. Here, 20 members of Forbes Coaches Council share soft skills professionals will need to stay resilient as the world of work continues to evolve them, underscoring the importance of honing human capabilities that technology can’t replicate.

1. Adaptability

Adaptability—powered by discernment and neuro-literacy—is the essential human skill in an AI-driven world. As intelligent systems reshape work, those who can self-regulate, think clearly under pressure and evolve intentionally won’t just keep pace—they’ll define the future. The edge isn’t just tech; it’s how we meet it. – Paul TemplerOpusdynamic

2. Listening

While I wouldn’t call non-technical skills “soft” (emotional intelligence is some of our hardest work), I think that listening is the most important skill for professionals to cultivate. AI can’t listen thoughtfully; its response is immediate and often lacking in deep understanding. When you listen to your team, you’re showing them that you care, and that builds trust. AI simply can’t do that. – Ellen Whitlock BakerEWB Coaching

3. Trust-Building Capabilities

If you can establish trust quickly, you will always have a competitive edge. As AI transforms work systems, technical expertise will evolve, but people will still choose to work with those they trust. That means being able to ask the right questions, deeply understand the customer challenge and deliver in a way that shows you’re on their side. AI can surface data, but it can’t build human trust. – Rebecca MackenzieThe Confident Communication Coach

4. Empathetic Curiosity

As AI transforms the systems around us, the soft skill I’d invest in is empathetic curiosity—the kind that not only seeks to understand, but also understands with care. In a world moving faster by the day, this human-centered curiosity helps leaders sense what matters, hold space for complexity and guide teams with clarity and compassion. – David GreeneUrbanomics Consulting Group

5. Metacognition

Metacognition—the ability to think about how you think—is key. A client once said, “AI didn’t make me irrelevant; my rigid mindset did.” When she began questioning her thinking patterns, she adapted faster and felt more confident in making decisions alongside AI. Self-awareness is the new essential skill to have. – Divya ParekhDP Group

6. Proactiveness

One of the greatest soft skills a professional can hone is proactiveness. Being proactive empowers you to recognize what change needs to be made and execute that change before it’s too late. Boldly stepping into uncharted territory is a nonnegotiable when it comes to adapting to a world impacted by AI. – Dr. April WillisApril Willis Consulting, LLC

7. Pattern Interruption

What I’m focusing on—and what I recommend—is pattern interruption. It’s the skill of breaking out of your default thinking or behavior. As AI takes over the routine, we have to stay sharp, creative and flexible. That means noticing when we’re on autopilot, hitting pause and choosing a better response. It’s subtle, but powerful—and it’s how we evolve with the change, not behind it. – Laurie SudbrinkLead With GRIT

8. Clear Communication

Professionals can improve their communication skills by being clear, concise and kind in their daily interactions. This approach enhances the valuable contributions that AI provides. Regardless of the industry, effective communication is crucial for leading oneself and managing systems and processes. – Karen TracyDr. Karen A Tracy, LLC

9. Cognitive Bridging

Cognitive bridging is the soft skill I’d recommend. AI excels at remixing data, but it often homogenizes ideas. What it can’t replicate is our ability to bridge memories and experiences—like the sound of bells, the scent of lavender or the sight of the Eiffel Tower—that spark unexpected connections and reveal the gaps where breakthrough innovations hide. – Gabriella GoddardBrainsparker Ltd

10. Perspective Getting

Perspective getting is where you ask additional questions to understand someone’s feelings. Instead of being ready to solve the challenge, ask questions such as, “Is there more? What am I missing? What’s stopping you from being successful?” followed by, “How does that make you feel?” Showing curiosity takes active listening to the next level by not settling for what someone is communicating on the surface. – Shelley HammellSage Alliance, Inc.

11. Nonverbal Awareness

The art of reading and interpreting nonverbal clues has been broken and lost in these times. We have replaced in-person meetings with electronic check-ins and events. Becoming attuned to someone else in such a way as to read their body language is a skill that can be learned. You can then ask questions to enter into a conversation that has more impact and meaning. It will be less agenda-driven and more personal. – John M. O’ConnorCareer Pro Inc.

12. Judgment

I would suggest honing judgment. We can now get immediate and data-driven answers to just about any question. But are we asking the right questions that will ultimately drive growth and change? Having judgment to understand what the right questions are will continue to be the real trick. – Amy Feind ReevesHireAHiringManager, Formerly JobCoachAmy

13. Psychological Flexibility

One soft skill to hone is psychological flexibility. There are a lot of discussions about what AI is going to change and how people need to adapt, which is important, but there is much less focus on what will not change. AI is not going to create high-performing teams or develop inspiring leaders, but it can put more pressure on them while creating new challenges. That is where psychological flexibility is needed the most. – Csaba TothICQ Global

14. Critical Thinking

Perhaps the one soft skill that must be present when using AI and other digital tools is that of critical thinking. This puts the user in the driver’s seat and helps avoid blind trust when automating processes, shortcutting projects and developing systems. – Aaron MarcumBreakaway365

15. Being Present

Developing the confidence to be present is a valuable skill to learn in today‘s climate, where human connection is increasingly important. Eye contact, soft eye approach, tonal variations, language, body language and posture are just some examples you can use to build rapid trust and connection. – Cellene HoogenkampKokuaHub Inc Coaching

16. The Skill Of Care

Professionals should hone the skill of care, which is the ability to consider, evaluate and act with regard for the human experience, not just the outcome. Taking time to notice the details, putting empathy into action, making decisions that focus on the desired experience, and balancing business performance with employee experience will ensure that outcomes remain meaningful as AI evolves. – Lindsay MillerReverie Organizational Development Specialists

17. Context Translation

Master the art of context translation. As AI accelerates tasks, professionals who can take insights from one domain and reframe them for another—across cultures, teams or industries—become invaluable. It’s not just communication; it’s the ability to shift gears without losing clarity. In a sea of specialists, the contextual translator is the secret strategist. – Alla AdamAdam Impact Institute

18. Strategic Agility

Strategic agility is a soft skill I would recommend cultivating. AI offers data and trends, but humans anticipate what’s next, adapt in real time and understand nuance. Strategic agility helps us combine insight, communication and decision-making to turn AI’s outputs into bold action, enabling teams to pivot fast and stay ahead. – Cyndee Blockinger LakeBlank Page

19. Problem-Solving

Problem-solving is a key soft skill to stay adaptable as AI transforms work. Paired with empathy, it makes your solutions truly resonate. AI can spot patterns, but empathic problem-solving helps you connect deeply with your direct team, extended team and senior leaders, positioning you as someone others trust and want to build with. – Tiffany UmanTiffany Uman Career Coaching Inc.

20. Resilience

We are experiencing a rate of change previously unimaginable. In order to deal with this continuous instability, we have to hone our resilience. The ability to set healthy boundaries, process and resolve unconscious patterns, manage stress and connect with others in an authentic and meaningful way will allow us to move through change in a more balanced and productive way. – Brittney Van MatreRewild Work Strategies
