Questions to help you empower your team and be a better coach

In my discussions with leaders, I get countless feedback on the ease of the SAGE coaching model. However many leaders find they can fall back into more of a telling mode when under pressure or time constraints. With this in mind, I’ve put together 15 questions to help leaders stay curious while continuing to be more coach-like, even when the heat is on.

Think about the three or four questions you would like to add to your repertoire to empower your team and be a better coach.

1. What have you thought about or already tried?
2. What do you think could work here?
3. What’s getting in the way of success?
4. What is your back-up plan if it doesn’t work?
5. What are some options and which feels right?
6. What is just one more possibility?
7. If you could do it over again, what would you do?
8. What are the pros and cons?
9. What seems to be the main obstacle?
10. What do you want to do, short and long term?
11. What steps do you want to take?
12. How will you know if you reached your goal?
13. What is the timing? When do you want to get started?
14. How do you want to be held accountable?
15. When will we follow-up/meet again?
